What is a masseter assessment? The masseter is a major chewing muscle at the side of the jaw. This appointment assesses concerns such as jaw clenching, grinding-related symptoms or prominent masseter muscles. A prescription-only injectable treatment may be one option, but it can only be offered following an appropriate consultation and individual prescription. In suitable patients, temporarily reducing masseter activity may reduce muscle bulk or the force generated by the muscle. It does not treat every cause of jaw pain, headache, tooth wear or temporomandibular-joint symptoms. Dental, GP, physiotherapy or specialist assessment may be recommended instead. How does treatment work? If prescribed, small injections are placed into selected points of the masseter muscle to reduce its activity temporarily. Effects develop gradually and wear off. The degree and duration of change vary, and repeat treatment is not automatically appropriate. Suitability and prescribing The clinician will assess facial movement, bite and symptoms and review medicines, allergies, previous treatment, pregnancy or breastfeeding, swallowing problems, neuromuscular conditions and relevant dental history. Treatment may be declined or deferred. Treatment and recovery If prescribed and performed, discomfort, redness, swelling, bruising, tenderness or headache can occur. Most people resume normal activity quickly, but response and downtime vary. Changes in chewing strength or facial contour develop over time rather than immediately. Risks and limitations Risks include unwanted chewing weakness, smile or facial asymmetry, altered lower-face contour, muscle wasting, headache, pain and an unsatisfactory result. Unintended weakness of nearby muscles and swallowing or speech difficulty can occur. Rarely, more generalised weakness or a serious allergic reaction may develop. Symptom relief and jaw slimming cannot be guaranteed. Aftercare and urgent symptoms Follow the instructions provided by the prescriber. Contact the clinic for significant asymmetry, worsening pain or unexpected weakness. Difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing, widespread weakness or a severe allergic reaction requires urgent medical help.
