What is an acne and scarring consultation? This is a structured assessment for active acne, post-inflammatory marks and acne scarring. Acne and scars require different approaches, so the first step is to identify what is currently active, the scar types present and whether medical treatment should take priority over an aesthetic procedure. What will we assess? Your clinician will review the areas affected, acne severity, scar pattern, skin type, current skincare, medicines, previous treatments, relevant medical history and treatment goals. Please bring details of prescription and non-prescription acne products, including any current or previous isotretinoin treatment. Possible next steps Depending on the assessment, options may include an appropriate skincare plan, Dermalux LED support, IrisAcne, a superficial peel, microneedling, subcision, injectable support or an Alma laser treatment. These are examples of existing clinic pathways, not a promise that any particular treatment will be suitable. More than one scar type may require a staged or combined plan. When medical assessment may be needed Moderate or severe inflammatory acne, painful nodules or cysts, rapidly worsening symptoms, diagnostic uncertainty or significant risk of further scarring may require GP or dermatology assessment. Controlling active acne may be recommended before scar procedures. Expectations and limitations Acne treatment can take time and recurrence is possible. Scar treatments aim to improve appearance rather than remove every scar completely. Response, downtime, risks and the number of sessions vary by treatment and will be explained before you decide whether to proceed. Preparing for the appointment Avoid starting a new strong active skincare product immediately before the consultation if it may obscure your normal skin response. Attend without heavy make-up where possible and bring your current product and medication list.
