Amino acids are compounds used by the body for a number of functions including to form proteins, they are often referred to as the building blocks of protein. The amino acid arginine, which is found in food, is a precursor to a compound made in the body called nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a vasodilator, in other words it causes blood vessels to relax and so it is important for circulation.
